Citing Images, Sound, and Media (including with Zotero) In-Person
Have you ever needed to cite one of these?
- Radio broadcast
- Motion picture
- Television broadcast
- Field recording
- Concert program
- Bootleg recording
- Software
- Video game
- Streaming audio or video
- Playlist
- Podcast
- Facebook, Instagram, X, or Bluesky
- TikTok, Reel, Stories, or Snapchat
- Discord or Twitch
Citing such sources can be puzzling! Unlike an article, chapter, or book, there may be no caption or title page to transcribe. And the various parts that make up the citation may differ. And we may need to highlight some particular aspect:
- the work (an Instagram post)
- the material or digital format (a historical shellac sound recording)
- an ephemeral experience (the streamed live text in a Massively Multiplayer Online Role-Playing Game)
In this library workshop, we will look at models drawn from scholarly literature of various disciplines for types that just may not appear in citation manuals. We will also discuss the principles behind citation, for cases when we need to invent a citation that falls outside any common category.
If you have citation stumpers of your own, please bring them!
Location: Library Classroom 160. Registration is appreciated, but not required. A laptop is recommended.
