“Albert Einstein’s Extra-Personal World: Science, Politics, and Religion”

Professor Matthew Stanley, NYU’s Gallatin School

Co-sponsored by the Vassar College Libraries and the STS Program

Albert Einstein described his goal in science as seeking the world beyond the “merely personal,” a  pursuit of universal truths unconstrained by human frailty and subjectivity. This can also be a helpful framework for understanding his thinking on religion and his political activism. In all three of these areas we can see Einstein stressing the importance of a perspective focused on “extra-personal” values. From his work on relativity to nuclear disarmament, these values are necessary in understanding his extraordinary journey through the revolutions of the twentieth century.
